Kukke Subramanya Temple legend

The Skanda Puranam contains the great history of the origin of the Kukke Subramanya temple. It’s believed Vasuki (snake King) was hiding in Biladvara cave near the Kukke temple. He was running away from Garuda, who was hunting snakes. Garuda located Vasuki and attacked him. However, since Vasuki was a devotee of Lord Shiva, sage Kashyapa Muni intervened and stopped Garuda.

He sent Garuda to Ramanaka Island, where there were plenty of snakes for hunting. Kashyapa Muni requested Vasuki to request Lord Shiva to protect him. Lord Shiva appeared to Vasuki, promising him that next Kalpa, his son (Karthikeya/Subramanya), would come to protect and bless him.

The promise was fulfilled after destroying a demon named Tarakasura.  Lord Subramanya and his brother Ganesha went to Kumara Parvatha, where Lord Indra welcomed them. Lord Indra also requested Lord Subramanya to marry his daughter Devasena. Lord Karthikeya agreed with the wedding taking place in Kumara Parvatha Mountain.

The wedding was attended by Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, and Vasuki on the Margashira Shuddha Shasthi. Lord Subramanya made a promise to stay and protect them.

However, Garuda, who is the son of Vinatha, wanted to harm Vasuki, the son of Katru.Vasuki requested Lord Shiva to protect him, and Lord Shiva asked Subramanya to protect them from Garuda.
