Comprehensive History of Mysore Palace

Karnataka is a one-stop destination for Hindu pilgrims and visitors from in and outside India. The state hosts many monumental temples, shrines and tourist attractions. Mysore Palace was the dwelling place of the Wodeyar Dynasty ruler of Mysore (1399 to 1950). The palace stands in southern Karnataka, Mysore city. The current palace is the fourth version of the original structure. The respective authorities have regularly renovated the palace and maintained the main feature and historical facilities. Mysore palace was a unique design by British architect Henry Irwin. The construction was undertaken up to 1912 under the supervision and management of Queen Regent Kempananjammanni Vani Vilasa Sanndihana.

Mysore Palace History

Mysore Palace has a strong connection and origin from the Wodeyars, whose history is attached to DV Rak, a Gujarat Yadava community. They stayed in Karnataka Mysore, thus establishing the Wodeyar dynasty in 1399. Wodeyar had strong ruling as they ruled the Mysore area for six centuries. During this timeline, he constructed a palace around Mysore Old fort in the 14th century. However, it was demolished and built later.

With the death of Tipu Sultan (1799 May), Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar III converted Mysore to be his capital and worked under the British. This saw the change of Royal name from Wodeyar to Wadiyar by his successor. During the royal wedding between his highness Rajarshi Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV’s eldest sister and Prince Jayalakshni Ammani. A fire broke out and destroyed the wooden palace, the Monarch and his mother, Maharani Vani Vilas Sannidhna, regent of Mysore. They appointed the British architect Lord Henry Irwin to build a new palace. The construction used Rs.4147913; it was later expanded in 1940 under the rule of the last Maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar.

The show starts from 7:00 pm to 7:45 pm, at an affordable fee of Rs. 100 for adults and Rs. 40 for children (7 to 12 yrs.); Foreign/tourists pay Rs. 200. Mysore palace is always lightened on Sundays, festival seasons and national holidays.
