Meaning of Kanipakam

Lord Vinayaka helps in controlling Ganas, removing obstacles, and providing wisdom. The word Kanipakam is derived from two words Kani meaning wetland, and Pakam, meaning the flow of water. This explains why Lord Ganesha lives in water inside Lake Kalyani. He is the son of Shiva and Parvati and has incredible powers and can cleanse sins. Devotees interested in visiting the temple must dip in the holy water to swear or confess any sins before the deity.

History of Lord Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple

The Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Temple was established early in the 11th century by the evolvement of Lord Ganesha and was quite mysterious. Based on legends, there were three brothers with disabilities (deaf, blind, and mute) but were farmers on a small piece of land. They required water for irrigation; in the old day, people used the Piccota system to draw water from the well. They used to help each other irrigate while the other used ply for the Piccota.

One day they found the well was dry and opted to dig; as they dug, their tool hit a hard object. Immediately blood started gushing out, and miraculous, they were healed of their infirmities. The villagers rushed to see and also dug for the deity. However, they couldn’t find the base as he sitson the water. A temple was constructed by Chola King Kulothunga Chola and expanded later by the Emperors of Vijayanagara.

Thousands of devotees come from far to worship Lord Vinayaka and celebrate various festivals. There are annual festivals like Brahmotsavams which take 21 days, and Deepotsava, which is the floating of lamps. Temple priests offer devotees water from the well as Prasad and conduct Satya Pramanam. The rituals are done for devotees with several defects and sins, such as cheating on their spouse, money issues, and other sins. If one lies, they can face severe punishment from Lord Ganesha.
