History of Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari

During the 11th century, King Kusuma Shresti and Queen Kusumamba ruled the Penugonda kingdom, which comprised 714 Got rajas. Due to their childlessness, they performed Putrakamesti Yagna, and Goddess Parashakti appeared and blessed them with twins. Queen Kusumamba gave birth to a boy named Virupaksha and a girl named Vasavi during Vaishaka Shuddha Dashimi day. A prophecy had been made saying the children would be fighters for people’s welfare.

Virupaksha became a fine leader and married Rathnavathi, the daughter of Arithisresti. Vasavi displayed a philosophical approach to life as she ventured into culture, music, and art and was a true devotee of Lord Shiva. Vasavi was a fair maiden with exceptional beauty who attracted the attention of King Vishnu Vardhana during his visit. The King insisted on marrying her under any circumstance. Her parents objected to the match but could not annoy the King by denying him his desires. They, therefore, let Vasavi decide for herself.

Sri Vasavi devi decided to be single and away from worldly pleasures. On hearing this, King Vishnu Vardhana got perplexed and declared war against Kusuma Shresti’s kingdom. The Guru of the Vaishya, Bhaskaracharya, the 714 gotras, and the King had a meeting, but only 102gotras disagreed with the marriage. Likewise, Bhaskaracharya disagreed with the marriage and said that a woman’s decision is meant to be respected and urged all of them to stand by Vasavi.

The kingdom’s unity broke, and only 102 gotras prepared for Defence against Vishnu Vardhana’s attacks. On seeing this, Vasavi decided to choose the non-violence path. To uphold the dignity of womanhood and prevent bloodshed, Vasavi offered herself to the God of fire and the 102 gotras. Vishnu Vardhana heard the news fell and broke into pieces. His son rushed to Penugonda kingdom and repented about it.

After her death, Vasavi became immortal for standing by the principles of a woman. Vasavi is celebrated in all Vasavi temples during Atmarpana day. She taught about social services, patriotism, tolerance, and honesty.
